Wisconsin Ag News Headlines
Weekend Rains, Cooler Temps Slow Harvest
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/23/2016

With most of the state getting multiple downpours of rain along with colder temperatures during the past week, farmers found it more difficult to combine small grains and harvest hay. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted in its weekly crop/weather summary on Monday that some reporters measured as much as 11 inches of rain in recent weeks.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated five percent short, 82 percent adequate and 13 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, 72 percent of the corn was in or beyond the dough stage, which is ahead of normal for this time of year. Another 25 percent of the crop was dented. There were some reports of corn being chopping for silage in southern Wisconsin.

Ninety-four percent of the state's soybean acreage was setting pods or beyond, more than a week ahead of last year and the five year average. Leaves were turning color on four percent of the state's bean crop.

Meanwhile, oats for grain were 88 percent harvested; and 98 percent of the winter wheat was combined.

The third cutting of alfalfa was 85 percent complete, with fourth crop now 29 percent harvested.
