Wheat Planting Lagging Across the North
USAgNet - 04/26/2017

Wheat planting progress in North Dakota was minimal last week due to a return to cool temperatures and precipitation in the form of both rain and snow. Temperatures are expected to remain below average at the beginning of this week, but warm towards the weekend. Planting of the spring wheat crop is only nine percent complete in North Dakota, an increase of three percentage points from last week. The average for this time of year is closer to 25 percent complete.

Planting remains most advanced in South Dakota with 75 percent of the spring wheat planted, but both Minnesota and Montana are behind average at 14 and 24 percent complete respectively. About a third of the South Dakota crop has emerged, while emergence in the other three states is less than five percent.

Weather conditions were marginally better in areas of the durum producing region for part of the week, allowing some progress. The durum crop in North Dakota is about five percent planted, similar to last year's pace, but below the five-year average of ten percent. In Montana, ten percent of the durum has been planted, behind last year's pace of 29 percent, and slightly below the average of 15 percent.
