Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small of the USDA declared a new initiative to promote high-speed internet access in rural communities across 11 states. This initiative, part of President Investing in America agenda, involves a $5.2 million investment through the Broadband Technical Assistance Program, funded by the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The funding aims to enhance existing internet programs and aligns with the administration's goal to ensure that every American community has access to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet. The announcement was made at the Texas Hispanic Farmers and Ranchers Conference, emphasizing the administration's commitment to growing the economy from the middle out and strengthening national infrastructure.
Projects benefiting from this initiative include technical studies, network design, and community planning to facilitate internet deployment in areas that are crucial for educational and economic development. Notable projects include a $1 million award to the Connecting Alaska Consortium to assist rural and Tribal communities in Alaska and a $820,000 award to the South Central Alabama Broadband Cooperative District, impacting 45 communities in Alabama.
This effort not only focuses on providing the necessary technical assistance and infrastructure but also underscores the importance of internet access as a catalyst for development and equality in rural areas. By collaborating with local organizations, cooperatives, and Tribes, the USDA aims to bridge the digital divide and enhance quality of life through improved connectivity.
