Wisconsin PLWPG report shows major conservation gains

Wisconsin PLWPG report shows major conservation gains

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) released the 2022-2023 impact report for the Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grant Program (PLWPG), demonstrating a significant increase in conservation practices among participating farmers.

“Wisconsin’s abundant soil and water resources are important to the success of our state’s $116.3 billion agriculture industry,” said DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski. “The producer-led program, and the conservation initiatives implemented by farmers in the program, continue to have a measurable impact. This helps preserve and protect soil health and water quality throughout the state."

The report highlights the program's success in fostering farmer-led conservation efforts. In 2023, 2,016 farmers participated in producer-led groups, managing 782,674 acres of cropland.

These groups actively engaged with their communities through 182 outreach events, reaching over 11,962 attendees with information on conservation and water quality practices.

Furthermore, 93 on-farm demonstration and research projects were initiated, providing valuable learning opportunities for farmers, landowners, and agricultural professionals.

The total acreage covered by conservation practices increased significantly, rising from 1.1 million acres in 2022 to 1.5 million acres in 2023.

Notably, there was a 29% increase in acres covered by nutrient management plans, a 15% increase in no-till farming practices, and a 2% increase in cover crop usage.
