The Wisconsin Youth Tractor & Machinery Safety Certification Program is a key initiative designed to meet US Department of Labor regulations for the employment of youth aged 14-15 on farms not operated by their parents.
In addition to this, Wisconsin Act 455 outlines specific provisions for tractor operation by children aged 12-13. These programs aim to ensure safety for young individuals working on farms and operating machinery.
The program, coordinated by Michelle Bachand, the AgrAbility and Tractor Safety Outreach Program Coordinator, offers education and training to young people, ensuring they can safely handle equipment and understand the importance of farm safety.
Bachand's outreach efforts focus on enhancing the safety and health of Wisconsin farm businesses through various initiatives and support programs.
The safety certification course will be held at Lake Mills High School from March 8 to April 26, with classes on Saturdays, excluding March 22 and 29.
For those interested in the course, registration details and additional information are available through the Watertown office at Madison College.
In addition, Camp Tapawingo is hosting two sessions for the program: March 28-30 and May 2-4. Check-in for both sessions is from 4:30 to 4:50 pm on Friday, with classes beginning promptly at 5:00 pm and concluding on Sunday at 5:00 pm. More details can be obtained by contacting Camp Tapawingo directly at info@camptapawingowi.org.
