Sylvanus Gaku joins UW-Madison as farm management expert

By Blake Jackson

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension is excited to welcome Sylvanus Gaku as the new Extension Farm Management Outreach Specialist.

Gaku will focus on providing farm financial risk management education, addressing critical issues impacting Wisconsin agricultural producers. This role plays a vital part in helping farmers navigate the financial challenges that affect their operations.

With Wisconsin's agriculture sector valued at $100 billion, it is crucial for farmers to continually assess and seize opportunities while overcoming challenges to maintain a competitive edge.

Financial risk is an unavoidable aspect of farming, whether during the initial stages, transitions, or succession planning. Factors such as shifting policies, fluctuating prices, rising costs, and unpredictable weather patterns linked to climate change all contribute to this risk by affecting yields and quality.

To thrive, farmers must rely on strong business management skills, supported by access to resources, data, and analysis for making informed decisions. Gaku's role will help provide farmers with the tools they need to enhance their operations' financial resilience.

Gaku brings a wealth of experience in agricultural economics and risk management to the position. His previous research explored farm debt management and strategies for utilizing safety net programs effectively.

Gaku has also contributed Extension publications on the impact of farm policy, crop insurance, and weather-related disruptions on farm income and financial stability.

Gaku work includes developing interactive maps and articles to aid farmers in making decisions regarding annual forage insurance, high-coverage insurance policies, and the ARC, PLC, and SCO programs, which are designed to protect against significant income losses due to fluctuating crop prices or revenue shortfalls.

“I am excited about the opportunity to help provide research and information to help inform decisions by farmers and those working to serve farmers in Wisconsin,” said Gaku.

Gaku holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Ghana, a master’s in Economics from Cleveland State University, and a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University in 2024.

Gaku prior experience as a farm assistant, working with a variety of crops, provided him with a broad understanding of farming practices and the financial aspects of agriculture.
