Wisconsin Teams Fare Well at National Dairy Judging Contest

The University of Wisconsin-Madison took top honors overall during the 18th Annual Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest last weekend in Viroqua.

The team, which was coached by Chad Wethal and Brian Kelroy, included students Abbey Wethal, Mitch Kappelman, Ryan O'Leary and Genevieve Dryak. Wethal was named the top overall individual award of the competition.

Placing second overall at this year's contest was the UW-River Falls. Members of that team were Ami Cooper, Sara Larson, Labecca Johnson and Nathan Laska; and was coached by Sandra Sawall and Steve Kelm.

The University of Minnesota placed third in the event.

In the reasons competition, the Madison team took top honors again with second place going to the University of Minnesota, and third place to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

The top three individuals in oral reasons take home a special scholarship from the James Crowley Fund.

Sixteen teams participated in the contest this year from across the United States.

The contest was held at the Vernon County Fairgrounds in Viroqua.
