State Cattle Numbers Unchanged From Last Year

All cattle and calves in Wisconsin as of January 1 totaled 3.5 million head. According to the USDA's latest cattle report, that was unchanged from the same time a year earlier.

State cattlemen had 270,000 beef cows on hand in January, about two percent less than in 2015. Milk cows, at 1.28 million were up 5,000 head.

The number of heifers at 500 pounds and over totaled 860,000 head, up one percent from last January, while heifers for beef cow replacement were up seven percent to 80,000 head. Heifers for milk cow replacement, at 735,000 head were one percent more from the previous year; and all other heifers remained the same as last year at 45,000 head.

Meanwhile, steers weighing 500 pounds and over were up one percent at 380,000 head. Bulls weighing 500 pounds and over were down 5,000 head from a year ago at 30,000 head. Calves under 500 pounds on January 1, 2016, totaled 680,000 head, down one percent from last year.

The 2015 calf crop was estimated at 1.39 million head, down slightly from the 2014 calf crop. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in all feedlots totaled 275,000 head, up six percent from one year ago.
