BNSF: Train Derailment Has No Adverse Impact on Environment
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/22/2015

A spokesperson for BNSF says last month's major ethanol spill near the Mississippi River does not appear to have impacted many fish or other aquatic life in a negative way.

Amy McBeth reports that evaluations by her company, along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, show that the environment has not been harmed or adversely impacted after thousands of gallons of fuel were spilled in a train derailment near Alma on November 7.

The agencies also completed a survey of mussels and fish in the area, which do not seem to be harmed.

Over two dozen rail cars left the tracks in the accident, spilling up to 20,000 gallons of ethanol into the backwaters of the Mississippi River. No injuries were reported at the time.

Meanwhile, the rail company says it will continue monitoring water quality in the area of the crash for the foreseeable future.
