Doyle Appoints Rohde to State DNR Board
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/11/2008

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Board will once again have some representation from the agricultural sector. On Monday, Governor Jim Doyle announced that he is appointing Gary Rohde to the seven-member panel. Rohde is a former state agriculture secretary and past dean of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls' College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.

"Gary Rohde has extensive experience as a leader in the agricultural community here in Wisconsin," Governor Doyle said. "As someone who has dedicated his career to advancing agriculture, I am confident he will promote farming in a responsible way while protecting the environment."

Rohde earned his B.S. from the UW-RF in Agricultural Education and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served at the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture from 1976-1981. He also served as the Dean of the UW-RF Ag School for nearly two decades before retiring in 1999. From 1990-2006 Rohde was a member of the Board of Directors of Northwest Farm Credit Services and AgStar financial services. He also served as the interim CEO if the Milk Marketing Board from 2000-2001.

"I want to thank Governor Doyle for this opportunity," Rohde said. "I look forward to representing the agricultural and environmental interests of the State on the Natural Resources Board."

Doyle was criticized for not re-appointing Dan Poulson to the DNR board last summer, who was the only member at that time with a connection to farming. The issue later prompted state lawmakers to draft a bill that would require any sitting governor to place at least one agricultural representative on the DNR board during their term. That legislation is still pending.

The natural resources board sets policy for the DNR and holds public meetings around the state to gather input on natural resources policies. The seven members of the DNR Board serve staggered six-year terms. At least three of them must be from the northern part of the state and at least three must be from the southern part.
