PDPW Hosts Herdsperson Training in Madison
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/20/2008

If you want to sharpen your cow-side skills, be sure to attend the Herdsperson Training seminar next month in Madison. The program is being presented by the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin on April 9 and 10 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The one-day sessions will include hands-on training, interactive discussions and demonstrations.

Dr. Roy Ax, University of Arizona, will lead an advanced bovine reproduction lab, highlighting techniques and management options. This lab involves hands-on dissection and demonstrations of reproductive tracts to help you better understand the estrous cycle and timed-breeding programs.

Another interactive demonstration lab features advanced cow-side practice and decision making. Working with live cows, this hands-on lab teaches you thorough nose-to-tail diagnosis, prevention and treatment techniques that save cows and lead to more rapid recoveries. You will learn and practice a multitude of techniques such as proper drenching, IVs and several testing processes, such as gathering/reading skin tests, ketosis, fecal, urine, blood and milk quality testing. Learn how to provide fast, effective preventative and follow-up care and when to turn the situation over to your veterinarian. This session will be taught by Dr. Jerry Gaska and Dr. David Ohman, two of Wisconsin's leading bovine practitioners.

This training is limited to 45 participants per day. Disposable coveralls and gloves will be provided, along with all training supplies, teaching materials and lunch. To learn more about the PDPW Herdsperson Training or to register, call 800-947-7379.
