Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/24/2016

It appears that summer has finally arrived in Wisconsin, as farmers were busy wrapping up their planting activity and moving on to hay during much of the past week. The latest crop report from the state's agriculture department indicated that a lot of the corn crop has reportedly bounced back with the recent warm temperatures. Though conditions are getting dry and many areas are in need of rain, the report said.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated three percent very short, 18 percent short, 71 percent adequate and eight percent surplus.

As of Sunday, about 91 percent of the corn was planted, which is about the same as last year and 13 days ahead of the five-year average. Corn emerged was 42 percent, five days behind last year, but four days ahead of the average.

Sixty-six percent of the state's expected soybean acres have been planted, slightly behind last year, but nine days ahead of the average. Soybeans were 13 percent emerged.

Nearly all of the oats are now in the ground and winter wheat was rated 89 percent in good to excellent condition across the state statewide.
