Perennial Crops Must Be Insured Before November 20
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/06/2009
Wisconsin producers have until November 20 to sign up for 2010 Non-insured Assistance Program coverage for perennial crops. This deadline applies to perennial crops such as apples, grapes,
blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, pears, cherries, honey, and maple sap, which are not covered under Federal crop insurance.
According to the Wisconsin Farm Service Agency, crops must be covered by crop insurance or NAP to be eligible for the 2008 Farm Bill Disaster Programs such as the Supplemental Disaster Assistance
Program (SURE), Livestock, Honey Bees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP), or the Tree Assistance Program.
NAP is designed to cover losses caused by damaging weather conditions. If losses are in excess of 50 percent, payment would be received. Losses are generally determined by the percentage of loss
compared to the producer's actual yield history. Eligible production losses are paid at 55 percent of the established value for the crop.
"Producers who currently have NAP coverage or who are interested in coverage need to keep accurate production records," said State FSA Director Brad Pfaff.
The November 20 deadline also applies to persons who have a 2009 policy and need to renew their coverage for 2010. Producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office to obtain NAP coverage
or for additional information on NAP prior to the November 20 deadline.
