Gumz Elected as WPVGA Board President

The Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association's board of directors will have a new president for the coming year. Rod Gumz of Gumz Muck Farms in Endeavor was elected by his fellow directors during the group's annual meeting in Stevens Point last week. He replaces outgoing board leader Wes Meddaugh of Heartland Farms in Hancock.

Bill Guenthner of Guenthner Farms of Antigo is the new vice president, with Wes Meddaugh chosen as secretary and Mike Carter, Bushmans Inc. in Rosholt, elected treasurer.

Meanwhile, Larry Alsum of Alsum Farms & Produce in Friesland and Dick Okray from Okray Family Farms, Plover, were inducted into the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association Hall of Fame. Sally Suprise of Ansay & Associates, Appleton, earned the Associate Division Business Person of the Year Award. Paul Cieslewicz, owner of Sand County Equipment in Bancroft, was named the Volunteer of the Year.

This year's Young Grower of the Year Award was presented to Chad Malek of Specialty Potatoes & Produce in Rosholt. And the WPVGA Researcher of the Year Award went to University of Wisconsin Geneticist Shelley Jansky.

The Agri-Communicator Award for excellence in communication and dedicated service in presenting a positive message about the agricultural industry was presented to Andy Wallendal, owner and consultant for Wallendal Supply, Inc. near Grand Marsh.

A special WPVGA Industry Appreciation Award was also presented to Nick Laudenbach, president of Fencil Urethane Systems in Wisconsin Rapids.
