Corn Harvest Begins as Wisconsin Crops Near Maturity

Wisconsin farmers had 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 13, 2026, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Corn harvest for grain had started in a few areas, particularly where fields received limited rainfall during the summer. In northwestern Wisconsin, some rainfall improved the appearance and growth of hay fields and pastures.

Topsoil moisture was reported at 12% very short, 29% short, 58% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture stood at 10% very short, 27% short, 62% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn development continued to advance, with 97% reaching the dough stage and 73% reaching the dent stage, slightly ahead of the 72% five-year average.

About 26% of the corn crop had matured. Silage harvest reached 32%, above the 21% average. Corn rated good to excellent fell one point to 61%.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 27%, compared with the 20% average, while 59% of the crop was rated good to excellent. Winter wheat planting reached 17%, near the 18% average. Pasture and range conditions improved slightly, with 43% rated good to excellent.
