Wisconsin Grain Prices, Steer Prices Up

Most Wisconsin farmers continued to see an increase in the value of their grain from January to mid-February. Wisconsin corn prices received by farmers averaged $3.78 per bushel in January, but had increased to $4.10 by mid-February. Average soybean prices in the state jumped $1.42 per bushel to $11.00 in mid-February, which was also the national average. Oats sold for $2.90 as of the middle of the month, two cents per bushel below January's average price.

Wisconsin's alfalfa hay sold for an average of $105.00 per ton in mid-February, a $5.00 increase from January. Wheat, barley, and hog prices are not published separately for Wisconsin, but nationally wheat sold for $10.40, an increase of $5.69 per bushel from last year. U.S. barley sold for $4.06 in mid-February, 97 cents above last year.

Meanwhile, state hog prices averaged $41.90 per hundredweight, $5.60 below 2007. Wisconsin steer and heifer prices averaged $85.00 per cwt. as of mid-February, 50 cents above last month. Cow prices jumped $4.50 per cwt. to $51.50. Calf prices were down slightly, averaging $1.00 per cwt less than last month at $151.00.

At the U.S. level, steer and heifer prices declined 20 cents to $93.20 per cwt. Cow prices, at an average of $49.70, were $3.40 higher than in January. Calf prices were up $1.00 to $118.00 per cwt.
