Cow-Calf Workshop Offers Tips for Herd and Pasture Success

Cow-Calf Workshop Offers Tips for Herd and Pasture Success

By Blake Jackson

The UW-Madison Division of Extension will host a Cow-Calf Workshop on August 24, 2026, at Solhjem Farms LLC in Arcadia, Wisconsin, providing beef producers with practical information to improve herd health and pasture management.

The workshop will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is designed to help farmers learn successful management strategies while connecting with other cattle producers. Topics will focus on improving grazing systems, animal performance, and overall farm productivity.

Participants will hear from Extension specialists and educators on several key areas of beef production. The program includes discussions on mobile grazing and polywire management led by the Nilsestuen Family, fly and tick control updates from Extension Beef Specialist Bill Halfman, replacement heifer selection with Ryan Sterry, pasture management and soil fertility with Grace Finnerty, and weed control strategies presented by Jerry Clark.

The event will be held outdoors rain or shine and will involve walking through farm areas. Attendees are encouraged to bring appropriate outdoor gear, including rain protection, sun protection, a lawn chair, and clean, washable footwear.

The workshop is free to attend, and snacks and refreshments will be provided through sponsorship from the Western Wisconsin Beef Producers Cooperative.

The event offers producers an opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge and ideas that can be applied directly to their operations.
