Wisconsin FFA Halts Sectional, State Speaking Competitions
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/28/2020

After two months of contemplation, the Wisconsin FFA board of directors has decided to suspend all state level Leadership Development Events for 2020, which includes speaking contests. State FFA Director Cheryl Zimmerman says sectional competitions were just beginning in mid-March when schools were closed as part of the governor's stay at home order.

"Due to the current restrictions placed upon the number of people in gatherings and the Department of Public Instruction not allowing student events to happen through June 30, trying to complete sectional competitions and then state level competitions is not feasible," Zimmerman said.

In addition, the National FFA Organization announced this month that it will not require members to qualify at the state level in order to compete nationally through virtual methods.

"This means any member who wishes to compete on the national level this fall will have that opportunity," explained Zimmerman, who also serves as the national secretary for the youth organization.

State leaders further decided that any current high school seniors will be granted permission to compete in the 2021 speaking contests next winter.

When COVID-19 forced school districts to close, only three of the state's 10 sections had completed their state-qualifying events.
