USDA May Enact Supply Management for Cranberries
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/21/2018

Cranberry growers in Wisconsin and nine other states may be required to place limits on their own production starting this year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed volume regulation for cranberries for the 2018-2019 crop year under a marketing order for producers in the nation's top growing areas.

The Cranberry Marketing Committee recommended the seasonal volume regulation. It would establish a marketable quantity of 7.275 million barrels and a grower allotment of 75 percent for the 2018 crop. The marketing order regulates handling of cranberries grown in Wisconsin, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Long Island in New York.

The proposed volume regulation would allow handlers to process as much as 50 percent of excess cranberries received more than their growers’ allotment, provided an equivalent amount of 2018-2019 processed cranberry products is diverted.

Handlers that processed less than 125,000 barrels during the 2017-2018 fiscal year or didn't have carryover inventory from fiscal year 2017-2018 would be exempt. Growers delivering fruit to exempt handlers would not be subject to the allotment.

The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register and written comments must be received by May 29.
