January Crop, Livestock Prices Mixed

Prices received for various state farm commodities were mixed in January. According to the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, corn prices around the state rose 75 cents per bushel to $4.40 in mid-January. Soybeans rose one dollar to $11.30 per bushel. Oats, however, were down one cent to $2.80 per bushel. Potato prices declined from $7.90 per hundredweight in December to $7.75 by mid-month. Alfalfa and other hay prices remained steady, at $100 and $70 per ton, respectively.

Nationally, wheat prices averaged $8.55 per bushel, $4.01 more than last January's price. Barley, at $4.92, was up $1.89 from a year ago.

Wisconsin livestock prices were also varied. Steer and heifer prices rose $1.80 per cwt. from December to mid-January, bringing an average price of $86.80. Cows for slaughter remained steady at $46.00 per cwt., while calf prices declined $2.00 to $155.00 per cwt. U.S. hog prices dropped $3.10 from the previous month to $36.50 per cwt.
