Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/07/2008

The leader of the Wisconsin Farmers Union, who came close to not seeking re-election for her job a month ago, will continue to serve on the National Farmers Union Executive Board. Sue Beitlich was chosen to sit on the panel during the NFU's annual convention in Las Vegas this week. She will also continue to serve as the chairperson of the of the organization's Education and Cooperative Committee.

Wisconsin sent four delegates to the meeting, where they helped adopted national policy for the NFU, including a special order of business to support American dairy producers, the 2007 farm bill, fair and profitable trade policies, renewable energy, local food movement, immigration, and the Risk Management Agency Biotech Yield Endorsement pilot program.

"We are pleased that the NFU delegation passed a resolution emphasizing the importance of creating a strong safety net and level playing field to help our Wisconsin farmers," Beitlich said.

WFU's state policy, adopted by Wisconsin members at the state convention in February also supports safety net programs such as Milk Income Loss Compensation program and commodity counter-cyclical program, as well as a stronger U.S. trade policy.

Following policy discussion, an awards ceremony was held for Farmers Union members who have contributed to the growth of the organization. WFU members Dirk Mulder of La Crosse, Patty Edelburg from Scandanavia, Adeline Jacobi of Wausau, and Bill Neuhaus from Union Grove received awards for membership recruitment within the state. Earlier in the week, NFU members hear from House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson and USDA Secretary Ed Schafer.
