2026 Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator Training Guide Released

2026 Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator Training Guide Released

By Blake Jackson

The University of Wisconsin’s Private Pesticide Applicator Training and Certification Program has released its updated process for individuals seeking certification in 2026.

To help applicators meet state training requirements, in-person training sessions and certification exams will be offered throughout January, February, and March in Chippewa, Dunn, and Eau Claire counties.

Before participating in any training or taking the certification exam, individuals must purchase the official training manual. Manuals are available exclusively through the UW Pesticide Applicator Training (PAT) state office in Madison and cannot be obtained through county Extension offices.

Each manual costs $43.00 and contains a unique PAT Number required for the certification process. Orders may be placed online, with delivery typically taking 5-10 business days. Rush shipping is available for an additional charge.

After securing their manual, participants may choose from several training pathways to complete the certification requirement:

Online Video Training:

This flexible, self-paced option covers the same core content as in-person sessions and is available for those seeking certification in the General Farm category. Participants have 14 days to finish the online modules once they begin.

Upon completion, a certificate must be presented to the test proctor to receive the reduced 50% passing score requirement. Exams must still be taken in person at a participating Extension office or administered online through Pearson VUE.

Live Training and Review Sessions:

For those who prefer a classroom environment, one-day review sessions will be hosted at various sites. Each session begins at 9:00 AM and concludes with the certification exam. Registration is required, and the fee is $10.00 per attendee.

Self-Study:

Applicators may also choose to study independently and schedule an exam through their local Extension office. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

Online Testing with Pearson VUE:

Pearson VUE offers online examinations with immediate scoring. The testing fee is $45.00, and successful candidates will receive credentials within three business days.

All certification exams are open book and limited to two hours, and participants are required to bring their manuals with them.

For additional information or local support, applicators may contact Extension offices in Chippewa, Dunn, or Eau Claire counties. Full details and registration links can be found on the UW PAT website.
