Great Midwest alpaca festival and Wisconsin fiber fest

By Blake Jackson

The Alliant Energy Center in Madison is gearing up for a woolly weekend as the Great Midwest Alpaca Festival and the Wisconsin Alpaca and Fiber Fest join forces for a spectacular event. Over 300 alpacas, some of the country's finest, will compete in a double halter show on April 27th and 28th. This free, family-friendly event offers entertainment and education for everyone.

Step inside the New Holland Pavilion 1 and be greeted by a haven for alpaca enthusiasts. Witness the grace of these majestic creatures in two show rings and learn from industry experts in educational seminars on breeding, marketing, and caring for alpacas.

Aspiring fiber artists can take workshops on weaving and felting, while seasoned crafters will delight in the bounty offered by over 40 vendors. From raw fleece and roving to finished products like yarn, socks, and sweaters, there's something for every fiber fanatic. Unique finds like alpaca teddy bears, jewelry, pottery, and even fudge await those seeking special gifts.

Support alpaca research by participating in the silent auction, with proceeds benefiting the Alpaca Research Foundation. Their dedication to improving alpaca health and vitality aligns perfectly with the spirit of the show.

This year's event introduces an exciting new addition: the walking fleece class. Breeders can showcase their alpacas' finest assets while they strut their stuff. The show also features separate competitions for two alpaca types - suri and huacaya - ensuring a diverse and visually stunning display.

Witness the judging process firsthand. Halter classes evaluate movement, balance, and conformation, while fleece classes scrutinize the quality and consistency of the alpacas' coats. Top contenders vie for championship ribbons, with winners celebrated in a special ceremony.

Production classes delve deeper, highlighting the success of breeding programs. Breeders showcase offspring sired by a particular male or select their best three overall entries, putting their breeding prowess on display.

Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of alpacas! Come see these gentle creatures, learn from experts, discover unique treasures, and support a worthy cause!
