WI farm bureau supports rural mental health

By Blake Jackson

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation (WFBF) is taking action to support the well-being of farmers and rural residents. Throughout May, Farm Bureau volunteers will be delivering care packages as part of their ongoing "Farm Neighbors Care" campaign.

"Mental health is a crucial concern for rural Wisconsin," states WFBF Senior Director Wendy Volkert. The organization emphasizes the importance of providing farmers with resources and support to navigate challenging times. This includes encouraging friends, family, and neighbors to check in on farmers and offer a listening ear.

The Farm Neighbors Care campaign recognizes the isolating nature of farm work, especially for those with limited social interaction. A simple conversation can make a big difference for someone facing stress from low market prices, poor weather, or other challenges.

Research reveals a concerning trend: farmers and farmworkers have a higher risk of suicide compared to other professions. Despite 91% of rural adults acknowledging the importance of mental health, seeking help remains a hurdle. Statistics show that only 31% of rural adults have personally sought help, and 24% have a family member who has.

WFBF's #FarmNeighborsCare initiative goes beyond raising awareness. The "Heroes of Hope" program encourages nominations for individuals who have positively impacted the lives of farmers and agricultural businesses.

These "heroes" could be anyone who lent a hand during harvest, provided meals, or simply offered a listening ear during difficult times. Nominations close on May 20th, and WFBF will recognize one grand prize winner and four runners-up, with prizes awarded by local sponsors.

By promoting mental health awareness and recognizing the power of community support, the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation is making a positive difference for rural residents.
