Crop Report: Farmers Finally Getting Back into the Fields
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/30/2018

After weeks of continued wet weather, the fields are finally dry enough for farmers to resume their fall harvest activity. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service says combines are rolling through the corn and soybean fields around the state, though temperatures were below normal. This week's crop/weather summary also noted that drizzle and scattered showers did slow fieldwork over the weekend in most areas.

Topsoil moisture levels were rated 79 percent adequate and 21 percent surplus. The saturated fields continue to have producers concerned about mold growth on the crops.

As of Sunday, nearly half of the corn for grain has been harvested, which is 11 days ahead of last year and four days better than average. The moisture content was reported at 20 percent.

The state's soybean harvest was 61 percent complete. That's a full week behind both last year and the five-year average.

All but 14 percent of the winter wheat was planted, with 66 percent of the crop now emerged. Crop reporters say the wheat condition was 81 percent good to excellent.

The fourth cutting of alfalfa was 96 percent complete. And fall tillage is nearly a third complete so far this month.
