The weather continues to be on the side of farmers as growers spent the past week harvesting of small grains and cutting their third crop of alfalfa. The latest crop/weather summary by the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted that topsoil moisture condition levels were rated five percent very short, 20 percent short, 72 percent adequate and three percent surplus.
As of Sunday, about a third of the state's corn crop was silking--about six days behind last year and three days slower than the five-year average. Corn condition was 79 percent good to excellent statewide, up two percentage points from last week.
Nearly 65 percent of the soybeans were blooming--a full week behind the 2021 crop year, but even with other years. Twenty-six percent of the beans were setting pods and the crop was 79 percent good to excellent, also an improvement from a week earlier.
With all but five percent of the oats headed, the crop is 73 percent colored and farmers even have nine percent of the crop harvested. That's four days behind last year, but one day ahead of the average. Winter wheat coloring was at 97 percent and 26 percent of the crop has been combined.
The second cutting of alfalfa was reported at 90 percent complete--two days behind last year, but nearly a week faster than average. The third cutting of alfalfa was 13 percent complete and looking 81 percent good to excellent.
