Dairy Grants Boost Wisconsin Farms

Dairy Grants Boost Wisconsin Farms

By Blake Jackson

June is a special time in Wisconsin as communities across the state celebrate June Dairy Month. It’s a moment to recognize the efforts of dairy farmers, haulers, processors, and consumers who contribute to the success of America’s Dairyland.

Dairy is a core part of Wisconsin’s economy and culture. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) supports this sector through the Dairy Processor Grant Program. Since its creation, this initiative has helped dairy plants grow through investments in food safety, staff training, facility upgrades, and expert consulting.

Thanks to Governor Evers and the state legislature, additional grants were awarded in 2024. The Governor's 2025–27 Executive Budget proposes continued funding for dairy, including $1.5 million for a new Dairy Agriculture Resilience Investment Now Grant (DARING). This pilot program will support on-farm projects that boost efficiency and long-term sustainability. The proposed budget also supports the Dairy Innovation Hub to drive research and innovation.

In addition to economic investment, DATCP is working to protect the health of the dairy industry. Since March 2024, over 7,000 milk samples have been tested for H5N1 avian influenza. Wisconsin is following USDA’s National Milk Testing Strategy while partnering with federal agencies and stakeholders to promote biosecurity and protect public health.

Pasteurization ensures that dairy products on store shelves remain safe and nutritious. Wisconsin remains committed to innovation and safety while continuing to produce high-quality milk and dairy products.

As June Dairy Month continues, everyone is encouraged to enjoy Wisconsin’s rich dairy offerings — from a glass of milk to a scoop of ice cream. Let’s celebrate the strength and future of the dairy industry.
