Wisconsin agriculture, nourishing holiday traditions

Wisconsin agriculture, nourishing holiday traditions

By Blake Jackson

As the holiday season approaches, we're reminded of the many traditions that make this time of year special—sharing festive meals with loved ones, gathering for celebrations, reflecting on gratitude, and setting goals for the year ahead. Many of these traditions wouldn't be possible without the contributions of Wisconsin's agricultural producers and processors.

From the juicy turkeys that grace Thanksgiving tables to the prime rib roasts that anchor holiday feasts, Wisconsin's meat industry plays a vital role in providing delicious and safe products for our celebrations. To ensure a steady supply of meat, DATCP's Meat Talent Development Program was created in 2022 to attract and train the next generation of processors.

Wisconsin's agricultural bounty extends beyond meat, as our state is a leading producer of cranberries, potatoes, green beans, corn, eggs, milk, and butter—all essential ingredients for holiday cooking and baking. These seasonal favorites are often grown right in our backyards, a testament to the hard work of Wisconsin's farmers.

Even the Christmas trees that adorn our homes come from Wisconsin. Nearly two million trees are harvested from over 800 tree farms annually, contributing significantly to the state's economy. DATCP's Bureau of Plant Industry ensures that these trees are high-quality, pest-free, and ready to bring holiday cheer to homes across the state.

As we gather with loved ones this holiday season, let's take a moment to appreciate the many ways in which Wisconsin agriculture enriches our lives, from the food we enjoy to the festive traditions we cherish. Wisconsin's farmers and processors are true heroes of the holiday season, and we are grateful for their dedication and hard work.
