Wisconsin Local Food Purchase Assistance Program Presents Summer Educational Events Series


Wisconsin's Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (WI LFPA) has exciting plans for the summer of 2023 with a series of public events aimed at building connections between the local food system and hunger relief network partners. These events also seek to provide valuable education to farmers, supporting their success in expanding production for supplying food banks, pantries, and community food access efforts. Event 1: Diversified Enterprises for Community Food Access at Full Circle Community Farm

Date: July 20, 2023 Time: 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Location: W2407 Hofa Park Road, Seymour, WI, 54165

At Full Circle Community Farm, attendees will gain insights into their mission of providing high-quality organic, local food while adopting a community-based farming model to revitalize their farm and community. The event will offer valuable knowledge on diversified enterprises and sustainable agricultural practices, catering to food production and community food access needs. Topics will include reducing tillage in vegetable fields, post-harvest handling through a tour pack shed tour and demonstration, as well as visiting their pastured pig set-up and rotational cattle grazing.

Event 2: Activate to Relate with WI LFPA at Philadelphia Community Farm

Date: August 12, 2023 Time: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Location: 599 280th Street, Osceola, WI 54020

Join Philadelphia Community Farm and WI LFPA for a day of community building. This event serves as a valuable opportunity for producers to connect, network, and share resources while addressing food insecurity in northern Wisconsin. Participants can bring a dish for the potluck lunch and those interested can camp overnight.

Event 3: Hermit Creek Farm: Farm Tour & Wholesaling to Food Distribution Programs

Date: August 19, 2023 Time: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Location: Hermit Creek: 65554 Spring Brook Rd, High Bridge, WI 54846 (with a caravan to another farm site during the tour)

Accompany WI LFPA Producer Landis Spickerman to explore the production and management of two farm sites in northern Wisconsin. Learn valuable techniques to enhance soil fertility using animals, crop rotation, and season extension for increased food access. Topics covered during the tour include food safety practices, how to make a farm wholesale-ready, and the integration of H2A workers into farm operations.

These educational events promise to support local farmers, strengthen food access initiatives, and promote community building in Wisconsin. Don't miss out on these informative and inspiring opportunities!
