Wisconsin Summer Cookout Costs Beat National Average, Farmers and Consumers Seek Sustainable Solutions

In the latest Wisconsin Farm Bureau Marketbasket survey, the cost of hosting a summer cookout for 10 people in Wisconsin has proven to be budget-friendly, falling below the national average. The total expense for 12 food items amounted to $66.72, a 4.2% decrease from last year's state average. Remarkably, this figure is also over a dollar less than the national average of $67.73, as reported by the American Farm Bureau. The abundance and proximity of dairy, vegetable, and meat processors in Wisconsin contribute to reduced overhead costs, allowing prices to remain below the national average.

Despite the overall affordability of summer cookouts, it's worth noting that this year's total is the second highest since the survey's inception. Factors such as supply chain disruptions, inflation, and ongoing conflicts have impacted food prices in recent years. It is essential to recognize that while grocery store prices may seem high, farmers themselves are affected by the rising costs of inputs like fuel and fertilizer.

Both farmers and consumers can adopt sustainable shopping habits to alleviate the impact of food costs. Approximately one-third of food produced in the United States is wasted, making efficient use of ingredients crucial for stretching food budgets. Simple practices like sticking to a grocery list, repurposing leftovers, and proper food storage can maximize the value of food purchases while minimizing environmental impact.

To assist consumers in making informed choices, the Wisconsin Farm Bureau has launched the online resource Gather Wisconsin. This platform offers valuable information on sustainable swaps, clarifying date labeling, and providing tips for optimal food storage. By embracing every available resource, farmers and consumers can navigate cost challenges while promoting a sustainable future.
