Wisconsin Total Farm Numbers Went Down in 2020

The total number of farms in Wisconsin during 2020 was 64,400. That was 500 less than the year earlier, according to newly released figures from the USDA. Of the 64,400, about 7,000 of those were registered dairy herds.

By the numbers, Wisconsin had 28,700 operations in the $1,000-$9,999 sales range this past year, down 300 compared to 2019. But the largest of the farm categories, which are operations that did over a million dollars in business, was unchanged at 2,050.

Total land on farms in the Badger State was 14.3 million acres, also consistent with the year previous.

Wisconsin's average farm size grew by just slightly at 222 acres. The average farm size for those in the $1,000,000 and over economic sales class was 1,707 acres.

Meanwhile, the number of farms in the United States for 2020 is estimated at 2.02 million, down by 4,400 from 2019. Total land on farms, at 896 million acres, decreased by about 800,000 acres from the prior year. The average farm size in the U.S. is 444 acres, unchanged from last year.
