Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/22/2021

Students with a sincere interest in the swine industry are being encouraged to apply for four scholarships being offered by the Wisconsin Pork Association. Organizers say the cash awards are available to high school seniors and college students.

The WPA scholarship is open to high school seniors. One $500 scholarship and one $400 scholarship will be awarded. An interviewing committee will select finalists.

The Whitmore Memorial Scholarship was established as a legacy to the late Rex Whitmore, a master statesman and communicator who served as the first executive director of the Wisconsin Pork Producers Association. Applicants must be a registered junior or senior at one of the University of Wisconsin campuses in Madison, Platteville or River Falls. This is a $1,500 scholarship, and priority will be given to applicants pursuing an Animal Science or closely related major.

The pork check-off group, in cooperation with the family of Buell Gunderson, has established a scholarship program to recognize the many contributions that Buell Gunderson made to the pork industry. The WPA will accept recommendations or applications from county pork producer organizations, industry members, pork producers, and colleges or technical schools for recipients. Individuals who have shown considerable dedication and involvement in the pork industry will be considered for the scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

And the Fredrich Memorial Scholarship honors Clarence Fredrich, who was actively involved in the Southeast Wisconsin Pork Producers Association and very supportive of youth programming in agriculture. High school seniors and college freshman from Walworth, Racine, and Kenosha counties are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The deadline to apply for the various state pork scholarships is December 1.
