Gov. Evers Calls on Trump to End Trade Wars
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/14/2019

Governor Tony Evers is asking President Donald Trump to help Wisconsin farmers by putting an end to what he calls 'the unnecessary' trade wars between the United States and its international partners. In a letter to the White House this week, Evers claimed that trade disputes with countries such as China are having a negative impact on many industries in Wisconsin, especially agriculture.

"One Tweet can harm thousands of Wisconsin citizens who make their living in our agricultural industry," the governor said in his memo. "As many farmers will tell you, aid payments cannot make up for what they've lost financially or personally. A government check simply does not make up for the pride they felt knowing they were getting a fair price for their high-quality corn, soybeans, or ginseng."

He added that one out of every nine people working in Wisconsin holds a job related to agriculture.

"Unfortunately, farmers of all commodities have been hit by a triple whammy of trade uncertainty, low selling prices for their products, and bad weather," he said. "This has put many Wisconsin farm families into extremely difficult situations."

Evers told Trump that tariffs are not on the list of things farmers want to see in this difficult economy and urged the president to work immediately to restore these critical trade relationships.
