$11M USDA boost for dairy resilience

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allocated $11.04 million in grants to invigorate the American dairy industry. Announced at the World Dairy Expo by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, these funds are part of the Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives (DBI), enhancing small to mid-sized dairy operations.

The investment aims to support the dairy industry in areas like business planning, marketing, and innovative dairy production techniques. This strategic funding is expected to boost supply chain resilience and economic growth, with a particular focus on value-added dairy products like artisanal cheeses and organic dairy products.

Four established DBI Initiatives across the United States, including those in California, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin, will administer these funds. These initiatives will provide technical assistance and subawards to help dairy businesses enhance their competitive edge and expand into new markets.

The impact of this funding is significant, with over 600 projects having already received support, leading to diversification and strengthened market positions for many dairy farmers. This year's projects include expanding sustainable practices and developing workforce training programs to ensure the dairy sector's future viability and competitiveness.

Through these efforts, the USDA continues to support the rural economy and ensures the dairy industry remains a key player in sustainable agricultural production. This initiative not only helps the current dairy market but also lays the groundwork for future innovation and growth within the industry.
