As the annual fall harvest begins, Alliant Energy urges farmers to know their surroundings and equipment sizes. This knowledge will help them avoid overhead power lines and keep them safe while in the fields.
The company says contact incidents with electric power lines increase significantly during harvest season, which is mainly caused by the increased use of larger equipment and operating machinery after hours.
Officials with the utility encourage operators to know the height of their equipment, be aware of their turning radius, and to stay alert when it gets dark.
If contact is made with a power line, immediately call 911 and inform the dispatcher of the accident.
Next week is National Farm Safety & Health Month.
