Join Wisconsin’s Local Food Purchase Program

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) is urging farmers, advocates, and local communities to support the Wisconsin Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (WI LFPA) as critical funding decisions approach.

The program has significantly benefited both farmers and food access partners over the past two years, and WFU is pushing for its continuation and expansion in the 2025-27 state budget.

In December 2024, WFU members identified WI LFPA’s long-term funding as a key policy priority for 2025. Since launching, the program has achieved impressive results:

  • 289 farmers and growers have participated.
  • 72 Wisconsin counties and tribal nations have benefited.
  • 254 food access organizations have received deliveries.

Over $4.18 million in locally grown food has been distributed to communities in need.

Although the USDA has committed funding for procurement, uncertainty remains due to recent executive actions and federal policy shifts.

WFU’s direct role in WI LFPA will conclude in June 2025, but the organization remains dedicated to advocating for its future and raising awareness among state legislators.

WFU is leading advocacy efforts and encourages public involvement through several initiatives:

  • Letter of Support - WFU has created an online letter of support for WI LFPA. Community members can sign or submit personal letters, which will be sent to state lawmakers to demonstrate broad support for the program.
  • WFU Lobby Day - March 4, 2025 - A Farm and Rural Lobby Day will be held in Madison, allowing farmers and rural advocates to discuss key policies, including WI LFPA, with state legislators.
  • Joint Finance Hearings - April 2025 - At the upcoming Joint Finance Committee hearings, WFU plans to present signatures and testimonials highlighting the program’s effectiveness. Advocates are encouraged to attend and voice their support.

WI LFPA has played a crucial role in strengthening local food systems, supporting farmers, and addressing food insecurity statewide. Continued advocacy and legislative action can help secure its future.
