Meat Institute Responds to Beef Market Inquiry

By Jamie Martin

The Meat Institute has voiced support for an evidence-based review of the beef industry following the President’s call for a Justice Department investigation. The organization clarified that, despite high retail beef prices, many packers are losing money due to record-high cattle prices and limited supply.

Julie Anna Potts, President and CEO of the Meat Institute, explained that packers have been operating at a loss for more than a year as strong demand continues to pressure limited cattle availability. “The beef industry is heavily regulated, and market transactions are transparent. The government’s own data from USDA confirms that the beef packing sector is experiencing catastrophic losses and experts predict this will continue into 2026,” said Potts.

Experts predict these conditions may persist into 2026, challenging both producers and processors to maintain balance within the beef supply chain. The Institute underscored that beef packers and cattle producers depend on one another, and a healthy industry requires aligning production with consumer demand.

“U.S. beef processors welcome a fact-based discussion about beef affordability and how best to meet the needs of American consumers, who are the industry’s most important stakeholders,” said Potts.

The Meat Institute reaffirmed its goal to promote collaboration and transparency while addressing the economic pressures affecting beef affordability. It called for a balanced, data-backed dialogue to ensure continued strength and fairness throughout the U.S. beef sector.
