How Jeff Morris Is Strengthening Wisconsin’s Swine Industry

By Blake Jackson

Jeff Morris, a Swine Outreach Specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, is dedicated to helping pork producers improve herd health, productivity, and long-term profitability through research-based education and practical guidance.

Working with operations of every size, he provides producers with science-backed solutions that can be applied to everyday farm management.

Morris's work focuses on key areas such as foreign animal disease preparedness, biosecurity, reproductive efficiency, and overall herd health. By promoting proven management practices, Morris helps producers build stronger, healthier, and more resilient swine operations while preparing for future challenges facing the industry.

A major part of his role involves working directly with farmers to address real-world issues. Whether conducting educational workshops, sharing best management practices, or responding to emerging animal health concerns, he strives to deliver practical recommendations that producers can quickly implement.

“I like to say I’m here to serve the swine producers of Wisconsin,” Jeff said. “It doesn’t matter if you have one pig or a million pigs, you’re important to me, and helping you succeed is what matters most.”

Morris is also actively involved in statewide educational programs, including Corn Soy Expo and the Show Pig Symposium at UW–Madison Arlington. These events connect commercial producers, breeders, and youth exhibitors while encouraging the exchange of knowledge and industry best practices.

One notable example of his outreach came during a reproduction workshop that questioned traditional semen-handling methods used in artificial insemination. Although many attendees were initially doubtful, producers who adopted the updated recommendations later experienced improved conception rates and larger litters.

“Most of the room didn’t believe it at first,” Jeff said. “But over time, those who adopted the practice saw real improvements in herd performance.”

Raised on a family farm, Morris has spent most of his life working with pigs, a lifelong passion that continues to drive his commitment to Wisconsin’s swine industry.

“I’ve been involved with pigs for most of my life,” Jeff said. “It’s what I do, and it’s what I love.”
