State's Sheep, Dairy Goat Herds Mixed in Numbers



Wisconsin continues to lead the nation in the total number of milk goats. As of January 1, the USDA reports that the state's total dairy goat count was 72,000 head, which was up down percent from early 2019.

The agency also reported last week that the state's sheep and lamb inventory as of January 1 totaled 86,000 head, which was up five percent from the previous year. Total breeding stock was also up five percent for the year at 69,000 head. Market sheep and lambs totaled 17,000 head. And the lamb crop for 2020 was 60,000 head.

Wisconsin's wool production totaled 345,000 pounds during the past season, nearly identical to the season prior.
