Cooler air and slow, soaking rain showers kept most farmers out of the fields during the second half of the past week. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service issued its second crop/weather report of the season on Monday, which said over an inch of precipitation fell over multiple days throughout the state. However, temperatures were well above normal with daytime highs ranging from the 50s to low 80s.
Topsoil moisture was rated at three percent very short, 15 percent short, 66 percent adequate and 16 percent surplus.
As of Sunday, about 19 percent of oats are planted--a week ahead of last year and 12 days better than the five-year average.
Potatoes were also seven days ahead of normal at six percent planted.
Farmers are estimated to have 20 percent of their spring tillage complete. That's 10 days ahead of last year and 13 days ahead of the average.
