With the weather finally warming up outside, farmers are making headway in the fields. The latest crop/weather summary from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service said a sunny, windy weekend with temperatures in the 80s provided good conditions for fieldwork to progress. Corn, soybeans, small grains, potatoes and vegetables were being planted during the past week. Manure and fertilizer applications were also ongoing.
Topsoil moisture conditions were rated eight percent very short, 23 percent short, 65 percent adequate and four percent surplus.
As of Sunday, 27 percent of the corn crop was planted across the state. That was just a day behind last year, but five days ahead of the five year average. Some reporters noted that corn was emerging in southern Wisconsin.
About 16 percent of the soybeans are in the ground--two days better than last year and more than a week ahead of normal.
Two-thirds of the oats have been seeded, which is six days and 12 days ahead of last year and the five-year average, respectively.
Meanwhile, spring tillage was reported to be six days ahead of what it was at this time in 2020 and is running two weeks ahead of average.
