A team of students from Grant County took top honors in the senior division of the state 4-H meats contest. The event was held last week at The Meat Market in Baraboo, where team members Jessica Patterson, Luke Patterson, Avery Crooks, Shelby Knoble, and Alayna Barth scored the highest points in the competition. Dennis Patterson coached the group. They will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest to be held this fall in Kansas City.
The second place senior team, which will advance to a contest in Denver, Colorado, was from Jackson County. Members of that group included Tyler Johnson, Grace Kling, Austin Laufenberg, Trent Laufenberg, and Wyatt Berg. Jessie Oberland coached the students.
Meanwhile, the top junior team this year was also from Grant County. Team members were Libby Vogt, Leah Patterson, Cameron Patterson, Aiden Patterson, Anna Drinkwater, and Kegan Patterson. Patterson served as their coach, as well. The second place junior team was from Sheboygan County. Student participants were Alison Gartman and Audrey Gartman. That team was coached by Michelle Klemme.
The contest consisted of evaluating classes of hams, beef, pork and lamb carcasses, and various retail cuts. Youth also identified retail cuts of beef, pork or lamb and graded beef carcasses.
