Wisconsin received much needed rain over the weekend, causing topsoil moisture levels to improve in every district of the state. According to the latest crop progress report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, moisture conditions were rated at nine percent very short, 19 percent short, 67 percent adequate and five percent surplus. The agency also noted that temperatures were slightly below normal during the past week with highs in the 80s over much of the state.
As of Sunday, the corn condition was rated 69 percent good to excellent statewide--which was unchanged from the previous week.
About 11 percent of the soybeans are now blooming, two days ahead of last year and four days ahead of the five-year average. Pods are expected to begin setting in some fields this next week.
Oats are 79 percent headed. That's five days better than last year and 10 days ahead of average. Nineteen percent of the crop is coloring, which is a week further along than normal. Seventy percent of winter wheat is also coloring.
And the second cutting of alfalfa hay is about a third complete--six days ahead of the 2020 progress and four days ahead of the average.
