A 2022 study by the online casino review site Lucky Gambler, leveraging data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, has highlighted the states with the highest risk of fatal crashes on rural roads.
Wyoming emerges as the state with the highest rate of rural crash fatalities, with 19.76 deaths per 100,000 residents. This stark figure compares to Massachusetts, which had the lowest rate at just 0.43 per 100,000.
Wyoming's rural roads saw 114 of its 134 total crash fatalities in 2022, emphasizing the dangers of its less populated routes.
Following Wyoming, Mississippi, and Montana are also identified as high-risk states with 15.87 and 15.49 rural crash fatalities per 100,000 people, respectively. These states see a significant portion of their total traffic deaths occurring on rural roads—over 66% in Mississippi and nearly 79% in Montana.
Further down the list, South Dakota, South Carolina, and Arkansas continue to show concerning numbers, with each recording over 11 rural crash fatalities per 100,000 residents. Maine and Alabama also make the list, underscoring the widespread issue of rural road safety across various regions.
Lucky Gambler's Marketing Director, Serhii Bielyi, comments, "Rural roads often offer scenic beauty, but they also present unique hazards that can make them among the most dangerous places to drive. The top ten ranking highlights the states where these risks are most prevalent, emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices."
The study not only serves as a crucial reminder of the inherent dangers on rural roads but also acts as a call to action for drivers to remain vigilant and for states to improve road safety measures.
