USDA Launches Farm Cost Survey

USDA Launches Farm Cost Survey

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is beginning the final phase of the 2025 Agricultural Resource Management Survey. Data collection will start in late December and continue for several months.

This phase of the survey focuses on gathering detailed information about farm economics across the country. The survey helps measure production costs, expenses, and financial conditions for agricultural operations. The information collected is used to support research and guide agricultural programs and policies.

“The data will help inform decisions on local and federal policies and programs that affect farms and farm families.” said Agricultural Statistics Board Chair Lance Honig.

NASS will contact nearly 40,000 producers nationwide to collect survey responses. The 2025 survey includes specialized questionnaires that focus on production expenses for cotton, hog, and broiler operations. These data help provide accurate estimates of costs within these production systems.

“In February, our interviewers will begin reaching out to those farmers who have not yet responded,” said Honig. “We appreciate their time and are here to help them with the questionnaire so that their information will continue to support sound agricultural decision-making.”

Federal law requires NASS to keep all responses confidential. Individual information is never released. Survey results are reported only in summary form, ensuring that no operation or respondent can be identified.

The data gathered through the Agricultural Resource Management Survey will be used to produce the annual Farm Production Expenditures report. This report is scheduled for publication on July 24, 2026, and will provide insights into national farm spending trends.

Additional reports and economic analysis based on ARMS data are published by the USDA Economic Research Service. These reports support research, education, and planning across the agricultural sector.

The final phase of the 2025 survey ensures that USDA continues to provide accurate and reliable data. This information plays a vital role in understanding farm economics and supporting informed decision making for the future of U.S. agriculture.
