Wisconsin Young Farmers Meet Congress to discuss ag issues

On September 13, 2023, members of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers and Agriculturist Program met with Wisconsin's congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. to discuss issues impacting agriculture.

The group, which consisted of 21 young leaders, met with Senator Tammy Baldwin, Senator Ron Johnson, and their member of the U.S. House of Representatives. They discussed a variety of issues, including Waters of the U.S., Federal Milk Marketing Order reform, and the upcoming farm bill.

Wood County Farm Bureau member Jason Behrend said that it was nice to see agriculture represented at the national level and impressive to see the power of Farm Bureau members when they come together.

The trip also included meetings with officials from the American Farm Bureau Federation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The group also visited the Brazilian Embassy to learn more about the country's agricultural commodities, export markets, and sustainability initiatives.

Iowa County Farm Bureau member Megan Yager said the trip allowed her to see the grassroots organization in action and that visiting with lawmakers drove home the importance of Farm Bureau membership and involvement.

The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers and Agriculturist Program is a leadership development program for Farm Bureau members between the ages of 18 and 35. The program provides members with an opportunity to learn about agricultural policy, develop their leadership skills, and network with their peers.
