Wisconsin Celebrates Farm Safety and Health Week

Wisconsin Celebrates Farm Safety and Health Week

This week, September 17-23, 2023, is Wisconsin Farm Safety and Health Week. This annual event is a time to recognize the contributions of Wisconsin's farmers and agricultural workers, and to raise awareness of the importance of safety and health in the agricultural industry.

The official signed proclamation is shown below, and the “parchment” copy here.

Wisconsin is home to more than 64,000 farms, and agriculture plays a vital role in the state's economy. Wisconsin farmers produce a variety of high-quality products, including grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and livestock. Wisconsin is also a leading agricultural exporter.

Despite the importance of agriculture, farm workers face a high risk of workplace fatality and transportation accidents. Tractor overturns and roadway crashes are the leading causes of death in the agricultural industry. Adults and youth who work on farms also face unique occupational health problems and high levels of stress.

There are a number of things that can be done to make farms safer. Farmers and agricultural workers can learn about safety practices through agricultural leadership and workplace safety education. Farm operators can identify and eliminate hazards and improve the design of farm machinery. Workers should use personal protective equipment and engage with those in farming communities who provide support, technical services, health care, and supplies.

During Farm Safety and Health Week, the state of Wisconsin joins the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and numerous other dedicated advocates and organizations in reminding Wisconsinites of the vital importance of the safety and health of the farmers and all agricultural workers who serve the state and the nation.

Here are some tips for staying safe on the farm:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and hazards.
  • Use personal protective equipment, such as helmets, gloves, and goggles.
  • Operate machinery safely and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Be careful when working with animals.
  • Take breaks and stay hydrated.

Tony Evers, Governor of the State of Wisconsin, proclaims that September 17 through 23 2023 as WISCONSIN FARM SAFETY AND HEALTH WEEK throughout the State of Wisconsin and I commend this observance to all our state’s residents.
