Hay market data for June 2025 has been compiled by Melissa Ohlrich, Crops and Soils Educator for Clark and Marathon Counties, UW-Madison Division of Extension. The report focuses on alfalfa hay and grass hay prices, including alfalfa/grass mixes, based on quality grades and bale types.
Prices were gathered from public and private quality-tested sales across Wisconsin and the Midwest. The data is updated twice a month, on the first and third weeks. All prices are listed on an as-fed basis, not dry matter.
Alfalfa hay with a Prime rating (over 151 RFV/RFQ) had small square bales averaging $292 per ton, with a minimum of $245 and a maximum of $321. Large square bales sold for an average of $121, while large round bales averaged $106. Grade 1 alfalfa (125–150 RFV/RFQ) had limited data, with large square bales at $85 and large round bales averaging $93. Grade 2 alfalfa (103–124 RFV/RFQ) saw large round bales selling between $55 and $63, with an average of $58.
Grass hay also showed varied pricing. Prime grass hay in small square bales averaged $157 per ton. Large round bales were priced between $93 and $101, averaging $110. Grade 1 grass hay had large square bales between $73 and $80, averaging $76. Large round bales ranged from $61 to $69, with an average of $67. Grade 2 grass hay in large round bales ranged from $45 to $63, averaging $55.
Note: Some entries were left blank due to a lack of reported sales. Averages represent the mean of all reported values—not mathematical calculations from the range.
