Scattered showers and below-normal temperatures meant farmers could not get much done in the fields during the past week. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service said in its weekly crop report on Monday that overnight lows dipping below freezing in many areas. Northern Wisconsin received rain and some scattered snow early in the week while the weather in southern Wisconsin was mostly dry.
Topsoil moisture conditions were rated one percent very short, 15 percent short, 70 percent adequate and 14 percent surplus.
As of Sunday, farmers in southern Wisconsin reported some corn planting progress. Nearly a third of the oat crop is also seeded statewide, which is five days ahead of last year and 10 days better than the five-year average.
About 15 percent of the potatoes have been planted so far, which is ahead of normal.
And spring tillage was reported as 30 percent complete. That's a week ahead of this time in 2020 and 11 days ahead of average.
