The early spring-like weather is giving farmers in the Badger State an opportunity to hit the fields a bit earlier this year. According to the first crop/weather summary of the season, which is issued each Monday by the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, warm and breezy conditions left little to no snowcover across the state; though soils in northern Wisconsin were still partially frozen.
The report said farmers have been prepping machinery and spreading manure on alfalfa and winter wheat.
Topsoil moisture condition were rated seven percent very short, 25 percent short, 64 percent adequate and four percent surplus.
Winter wheat condition was rated 69 percent good to excellent statewide. And farmers in the far southern areas of the state have begun seeding oats this past week.
Meanwhile, spring tillage activity was reported as eight percent complete as of Easter Sunday. That's nine days ahead of last year and nearly two weeks better than the five-year average.
